Adventure at the Map Library

Please form into groups of two or three. There are five "stations" around the Map Library, some of them might only take five or ten minutes, but plan your time to be able to visit them all.

List the members of your group (and your section):

Station 1: Find a Topographic Quadrangle

Pick a place you know about in Washington State... Locate the quad sheet that covers this area using the INDEX MAP. Enter the following data about each sheet:

 Name of Sheet

 Date created
Date of last revision (if any)

Bring your quad sheet with you to Station 2.

Station 2: Quad sheets and More generalized maps

Compare the features on your topographic quad and the features shown on one of the state-wide maps made available (versions of the 1:500,000 State Map by USGS). (This is very unfair, the state map is reduced by almost 21 times...)

 Name of Sheet

 % Roads

 % Streams

Are there any features that appear on the state map, but not on the topographic quads?

Station 3, 4, 5

At these three stations, you will look at examples of maps from the Canada Land Inventory(3 look at TWO), the US National Wetlands Inventory(4, Do one), and the US Census Bureau(5, pick two at least). At each station, please take a look at the maps, and try to figure out what kind of information is being mapped.

At position 4: how many DIFFERENT wetland labels can you count on your quad sheet?

At position 5: can you tell what kind of class intervals were used on your maps? (some have none)
