Map types

Purpose of lecture:

  • Continuing on from the lecture about cartographic abstraction
  • more (preparation/debriefing) for lab meetings IN MAP LIBRARY
  • Introduce some constrasting map types
  • another excuse to show off some maps

  • What is this map telling you?

    Some students hear this phrase too much... Sorry.

    Point Symbols

    CAN USE

    Examples:

  • Point symbols (nominal)
  • Proportional Symbols (circles and divided pie charts) for continuous attribute
  • Dot density maps (1 point = 200 cows) - Entities collected into representative location

  • Line Symbols

    CAN USE

    Examples:

  • Highway maps
  • Isolines (contours) [not really about the lines at all!]
  • Flow maps (use size in proportion to "flow")

  • Area Symbols
